Design It For Us Statement Applauding New Proposed FTC Rules Strengthening COPPA
Federal Trade Commission announced new, much-needed rules imposed on social media companies that protect kids and teens online, in line with the Design It For Us Policy Platform
Design It For Us co-chair Zamaan Qureshi issued the following statement in response to the new proposed rulemaking from the FTC on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule:
“We applaud the FTC’s new proposed rules that strengthen COPPA by centering the experience of children online, rather than Big Tech’s bottom line. The proposed rule directly targets Big Tech’s toxic business model by requiring the invasive practice of surveillance advertising to be off by default, limiting harmful nudges that keep young people coming back to the platform even when they don’t want to, and including protections against the collection of biometric information,” said Zamaan Qureshi, Design It For Us co-chair.
Qureshi continued, “We are pleased to see that the Design It For Us Policy Platform — released earlier this year in consultation with young people — has been reflected in this proposal by the FTC, balancing the desire of young people to be participants in their digital environment while significantly improving their privacy and safety. The FTC is acting where Congress has failed to, imposing strict rules for Big Tech who have spent years profiting off our personal information and data. This proposal should signal to Congress to act quickly in 2024 to advance bipartisan kids’ privacy and safety legislation.”
In September 2023, Design It For Us launched its Policy Platform putting forth key principles that we strive to uphold in our support for legislation and policy meant to best protect kids, teens, and young people online today. The Policy Platform was circulated to Congress and Executive Agencies.
Earlier this year, the coalition also met with members of Congress on a bipartisan basis to share our experiences on social media, offer policy recommendations, and urge Congress to advance KOSA and COPPA 2.0.
