Design It For Us on White House Report to Address Online Youth Safety
Design It For Us core team member Emma Lembke issued the following statement on the Biden administration’s interagency task force report to protect the online safety and privacy of youth:
“For too long, my generation has suffered from social media algorithms that prioritize Big Tech profits over our safety and privacy online. Today’s report by the Biden administration outlines recommendations that tackle Big Tech’s failure to keep us safe and protect our privacy as kids online safety legislation stalls in Congress and in the states. These guidelines are also squarely in line with our coalition’s existing work to advance legislation like KOSA and COPPA 2.0 at the federal level and Kids Code bills in state legislatures across the country. I testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee more than a year ago to implore our leaders to act and offered my firm support for this legislation again at today’s unveiling of this report. We urge industry leaders and policymakers alike to take the much needed steps toward ensuring that young people can enjoy an online environment that puts our safety, mental health and wellbeing at the forefront.”
