Design It For Us Applauds Signing of the Vermont Age-Appropriate Design Code into Law

We applaud the Vermont General Assembly for working to protect young people from online harms, and we’re thrilled to see the Governor sign the Vermont Age-Appropriate Design Code into law.

Vermont’s leadership marks a substantial step toward protecting young people online.

Design It For Us Co-chair Zamaan Qureshi issued the following statement as the bipartisan Vermont Age-Appropriate Design Code becomes law:

“We applaud the Vermont General Assembly for working to protect young people from online harms, and we’re thrilled to see the Governor sign the Vermont Age-Appropriate Design Code into law. We thank Rep. Monique Priestley and the bill’s sponsors for their tireless leadership, work, and partnership in making this bill become law. We are proud of the young Vermonters who told their stories and took on Big Tech, most especially Kaitlynn Cherry and Jonathan Pickarski, who led the way for young Vermonters across the state, testifying and rallying, to help this bill become law.

“This victory is especially meaningful because just last year, this very bill was vetoed by the Governor. Today’s signature reflects the growing momentum and undeniable power of young people and families demanding safer, healthier online spaces. This is the kind of leadership that brings technology into the future in a sustainable way, supporting the well-being and livelihoods of young people for generations to come. We are proud and excited to see Vermont stand up for our future.”

Design It For Us first started as a campaign effort to pass the California Age-Appropriate Design Code in 2022 and has since become a youth-led coalition advocating for safer social media and online platforms for kids, teens, and young adults. Our movement continues to gain momentum, thanks to the tireless work of advocates and our elected leaders who are willing to boldly stand up against Big Tech. Design It For Us advocates met with lawmakers, hosted a rally, and testified before the Vermont General Assembly to support the unanimous and bipartisan passage of the Vermont AADC.”
