Design It For Us Responds to Appeals Court Ruling on the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act
Design It For Us co-chair Arielle Geismar issued the following statement on the Ninth Circuit Court’s narrowing of the district court’s injunction blocking California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code:
“While I’m pleased to see the careful consideration of the Ninth Circuit in its decision to remand much of the California Age-Appropriate Design Code back to the district court, California youth have waited too long for the protections it guarantees. This law would provide long overdue protection for my generation to ensure a safer online environment after sustained exploitation from the undue harms of social media, and we look forward to it coming into effect. NetChoice is, once again, using all legal avenues to delay implementation and shirk its members’ responsibility to protect young people online. They continue to shield Big Tech’s toxic business practices and predatory algorithms from common-sense regulation.”
Design It For Us first started as a campaign effort to pass the California Age-Appropriate Design Code in 2022 and has since become a youth-led coalition advocating for safer social media and online platforms for kids, teens, and young adults. Building on the successful passage of the CA AADC, Design It For Us advocates met with lawmakers and testified before the Maryland General Assembly to support the unanimous and bipartisan passage of the Maryland Kids Code.
