Design It For Us applauds the Ninth Circuit ruling, enabling the California Age-Appropriate Design Code (CA AADC) to move forward

Design It For Us co-chair Nikki Iyer released the following statement:

“We are pleased that the Court upheld the CA AADC, finding that NetChoice and Big Tech’s arguments largely fell flat. NetChoice’s frivolous, years-long legal challenge to a common-sense law aimed at regulating social media’s core design denied young Californians years of protection from Big Tech’s predatory design features and harmful algorithms. Today’s ruling is a huge step forward for the accountability of Big Tech. While Congress sits on its hands, states across the country are effectively enacting Age-Appropriate Design Codes.

“Design It For Us was conceived as a campaign to support the CA AADC, calling on companies to design their products for us. This ruling is significant for the young Californians who told their stories to help pass this landmark law, and for all young people across the country who have been exploited and undermined for too long. This ruling affirms across the United States that design-based regulation that targets Big Tech’s business model is not only possible, but it is also constitutional, and it’s popular.”

Design It For Us has led efforts to pass the Age-Appropriate Design Code across the US since 2022:

  • In 2022, the Design It For Us campaign was launched to support the California Age-Appropriate Design Code. Young advocates testified before the California legislature, led a multimedia campaign, and authored op-eds to help ensure the successful passage of the landmark bill.
  • In 2023, Design It For Us filed an amicus brief with the Ninth Circuit arguing that the CA AADC does not regulate speech; it regulates the core business model, and that its purpose is to protect kids online.
  • In 2024, Design It For Us helped pass the Maryland Kids Code, bringing together young people from across the state to testify, advocate, and rally in support of the law.
  • In 2025, Design It For Us led efforts to pass the Vermont Age-Appropriate Design Code, organizing a rally in Manchester, testifying, writing to the Governor, and directing dozens of constituents’ outreach to the legislature.
