Design It For Us on Updated COPPA 2.0 with Co-sponsorship from Senators Cantwell and Cruz

Youth coalition expresses gratitude for the groundswell of momentum towards kids’ online safety.

Design It For Us Co-Chair Zamaan Qureshi issued the following statement in response to the latest version of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) and Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell and Ranking Member Ted Cruz’s co-sponsorship of the bill:

“We’re grateful for the groundswell of momentum towards kids’ online safety, especially from the Senate Commerce Committee’s leadership. The growing support for kids’ online safety legislation through the latest updates to COPPA 2.0 is a testament to the work of advocates and the renewed commitment from leaders in Congress to finally address the harms of social media platforms. We are excited that after more than two decades, momentum is on the side of young people who have for so long demanded action and accountability.”

Last summer, Design It For Us spent a week in Washington, D.C. meeting with White House officials, congressional members, and their staff to demand urgent action on kids’ safety legislation, including the Kids Online Safety Act and Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0), which led to the bills’ unanimous and bipartisan passage out of the Senate Commerce Committee. Most recently, Design It For Us protested in the recent Senate Judiciary hearing with the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X, Snap, and Discord on their failure to protect young people online and co-hosted a rally advocating for immediate action on kids’ safety legislation.
