Design It For Us on Latest Changes to the Kids Online Safety Act
Design It For Us applauds growing bipartisan support for KOSA and calls for immediate passage
Design It For Us Co-Chair Zamaan Qureshi issued the following statement in response to the announcement that the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) now has 62 co-sponsors in the Senate, in addition to revisions to the legislation that would narrow State Attorneys General enforcement, strengthen the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforcement, and improve language to ensure that the bill is focused on design and product features:
“The latest improvements to the Kids Online Safety Act are welcome changes that would ensure this bill cannot be weaponized to restrict civil liberties – the result of the tireless advocacy of young people desperate for change to protect our generation online. We are proud of the role our coalition played in working to improve upon the bill, persevering to ensure safety by design changes that reflect the core of our mission, and working closely with Senate offices and organizations to address the concerns of our peers.
“Leaders in Congress know the pain, grief, and loss of parents and young people caused by social media platforms that are designed to addict us for maximum profit. We have the momentum to finally pass legislation through Congress to protect kids online and enact it into law.”
Last summer, Design It For Us spent a week in Washington, D.C. meeting with White House officials, congressional members, and their staff to demand urgent action on kids’ safety legislation, including the Kids Online Safety Act, which led to the bill’s unanimous and bipartisan passage out of the Senate Commerce Committee. Most recently, Design It For Us protested in the recent Senate Judiciary hearing with the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X, Snap, and Discord on their failure to protect young people online and co-hosted a rally advocating for immediate action on KOSA.
