Design It For Us Co-chair Arielle Geismar issued the following statement on the Monday night passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act:

“Today, Design It For Us applauds the House of Representatives’ passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a long-overdue and hard-fought measure that finally provides civil recourse and means of justice for victims of AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII). For too long, survivors of AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery have lacked effective measures to remove content made in their likeness from social media without consent, or seek accountability from bad actors who knowingly create and distribute the content,” said Arielle Geismar, Co-chair of Design It For Us. “The passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act sends a clear message: Big Tech can no longer use survivors’ pain for profit.”

“AI-generated NCII has become a pervasive form of online harassment and cyberbullying, especially for young women. The TAKE IT DOWN Act criminalizes the publishing of these digital forgeries, requires platforms to take down NCII upon notice from the victim, and protects lawful speech alongside good faith attempts to assist victims.

“The passage of this bill marks a critical step forward in seeking accountability against Big Tech’s profit-over-humans business model. This progress speaks to the power young people hold in advocating for changes to Big Tech’s profit-incentive ecosystem: We will not sit idly by while companies facilitate harm to our peers. Design It For Us has activated its network to advocate in support of the bill and led digital campaigning to expand awareness of the bill’s impact. We are eager to see this bill signed into law.”
