Design It For Us Co-Chair Zamaan Qureshi issued the following statement on the U.S. House of Representatives’ bipartisan introduction of the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) and the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).

“After more than two decades without meaningful safety or privacy protections, the U.S. is now at a pivotal moment to pass modernized legislation to protect kids online, with both COPPA 2.0 and KOSA enjoying overwhelming bipartisan — and now bicameral — support. We have fought tirelessly to bring light to the harms young people face online, and worked closely with members of Congress and their staff to ensure our voices and experiences are front and center when they write laws and make decisions about our safety and well-being.”

“Now that both bills have been introduced in the House, alongside critical privacy legislation, we urge our leaders in Congress to seize this opportunity to take action and side with young people and their families over protecting Big Tech’s profits. Congress has no excuse to delay addressing the harms of online platforms to kids and teens already exacerbated by decades of inaction.”

Last summer, Design It For Us spent a week in Washington, D.C. meeting with White House officials, congressional members, and their staff to demand urgent action on kids’ safety legislation, including the KOSA and COPPA 2.0, which led to both bills’ unanimous and bipartisan passage out of the Senate Commerce Committee. Most recently, Design It For Us protested in the recent Senate Judiciary hearing with the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X, Snap, and Discord on their failure to protect young people online and co-hosted a rally advocating for immediate action on KOSA and COPPA 2.0. Following the rally, KOSA earned its filibuster-proof support in the Senate, including from Majority Leader Schumer. The coalition continues to work collaboratively with Senate and House offices, providing critical perspective and helping to advance vital kids online safety and privacy legislation further than ever before.
